On June 21, 2020, two young men from Marion, Indiana, demonstrated remarkable courage and selflessness when they rescued a man trapped in a burning home. While several bystanders watched and recorded the chaos, Marcus Harvey and Tre Jones immediately sprang into action, risking their own lives to save another.
The fire had erupted after 56-year-old Guy Tarlton fell asleep while cooking, and the flames quickly consumed his home. With no smoke detectors in place, the situation became even more perilous. As the fire raged, Harvey and Jones kicked down the front door, finding Tarlton unconscious inside. Without hesitation, they dragged him to safety, putting their own lives in danger to ensure his survival.Thanks to their quick thinking, Tarlton survived the fire, though he was rushed to the hospital for treatment. His recovery was swift, and he made a full recovery, all due to the heroic actions of Harvey and Jones. Their selflessness in the face of danger prevented what could have been a tragic loss.In recognition of their bravery, the Marion Fire Department awarded both young men the Citizens Life Saving Award on July 7, 2020, during a City Council meeting. Mayor Jess Alumbaugh praised their extraordinary courage, stating, “I am truly inspired by the courage and compassion of these two young men who selflessly risked their own lives to save another.”The actions of Marcus Harvey and Tre Jones serve as a profound reminder of the impact that selflessness, courage, and compassion can have on our communities.
